Math quiz...

This is an old math quiz...

This happened a long time ago when you could rent a room for 10 dollars a person....

3 brothers go to a hotel and decide to rent 1 room for all 3.
The hotel clerk charges them each 10 dollars.
They each pay 10 dollars and go to their room. (A total of 30 dollars.)
Later the clerk discovers he made an error and should have only charged
them 25 dollars.
The clerk summons the bell hop. The clerk gives the bell hop 5 one dollar
bills and sends him to the 3 brothers with the refund. The bell hop wonders how to
divide the 5 dollars between the 3 people. So the bell hop being a bit unscrupulous decides to
keep 2 dollars and give each of the brothers 1 dollar.

Now the brothers paid $10 each. ( 30 dollars)
The Clerk finds his mistake...
The clerk gave the bell hop $5 to return to the brothers.
The bell hop keep $2 leaving $3.
The bell hop gave each brother $1 back.

So the brothers each paid $9 (3 times 9 = 27)
The bell hop stole $2.

$27 plus $2 = $29
Where is the other 1 dollar?

"So I was grading my daughter's spelling/vocabulary test today and I had to laugh! At the end of the test she had to write a paragraph about anything using many of her spelling words. She wrote about the beautiful birds and the beautiful baby birds, etc. The funny part was she spelled beautiful totally wrong! She spelled it "buttfull". Science and Mathematics Initiative for Learning Enhancement

The SMILE program was designed to enhance the elementary and high school learning of Science and Mathematics through the use of the phenomenological approach.
Between 1986 and 1997 each summer session participant was asked to create and publish a single concept lesson plan. These lesson plans include the materials needed, a suggested strategy and expected outcomes. There are currently almost 900 of these lesson plans available (see subject indices below). In addition, starting in 1997 the participants in the academic year program have been asked to present a brief single concept lesson or idea. Summaries of the academic year lessons are at academic year notes. All of these lessons are available in the following formats:

A CD-ROM with all of the lessons (summer and academic year) and links from both this and the SMART web sites for $15.00US to a US address ($20US outside the United States). Contact Roy Coleman at Morgan Park High School for availability.

Yes you can! There are testing centers that will give your child the TASK but if you would like to do it in the comfort of your own home and stay out of the system then here is a great link.

**** This is a great resource if you want your child to take the TASK just as a way to evaluate grade level - to compare "apples to apples". I printed it out and had my kiddos take it so I had a hard copy. TIP: print out test and then go to end of test and hit submit (without answering anything). It will grade the test (yes it will say you got zero correct) and give you a list of the correct answers.
